Touring a daycare for the first time can feel like a lot all at once. Between watching your child’s reaction to a new environment, trying to read the room, and remembering everything you meant to ask, it’s easy to walk out with more questions than answers. A little preparation goes a long way. Here’s a simple checklist to help you make the most of your visit and feel confident in your decision.
Before You Go
A few minutes of prep before your tour can help you get more out of the visit itself.
Write down your top questions ahead of time so you don’t forget them once you’re there.
Think about your family’s schedule, including drop-off and pick-up times, so you can ask about hours that actually fit your routine.
Bring your child along if possible. Their comfort level in the space can tell you a lot.
Questions About Safety and Staff
Safety is usually the first thing on a parent’s mind, and it’s worth asking directly rather than assuming.
- What are your staff-to-child ratios for each age group?
- What background checks and training do teachers complete?
- How do you handle drop-off and pick-up security?
- What’s your protocol for illness, allergies, or medical emergencies?
- How long have your teachers been with the center?
That last question matters more than it might seem. Low staff turnover is often a strong sign of a healthy, well-run classroom environment.
Questions About Curriculum and Daily Routine
Every center structures its day a little differently, so it helps to ask specifically what a typical day looks like.
- What does a daily schedule look like for my child’s age group?
- How is learning built into the day, and what curriculum do you follow?
- How much time is spent on outdoor play, and what happens on bad-weather days?
- How do you handle nap time and meals?
- How will I know what my child worked on or learned each day?
Pay attention to how specific the answers are. A team that can walk you through a real daily routine, rather than speaking in generalities, is usually one that runs a consistent, well-organized program.
Questions About Policies and Communication
The day-to-day experience matters, but so does how a center communicates with families.
- How do you update parents throughout the day?
- What’s your policy on holidays, closures, and sick days?
- How are conflicts between children handled?
- What does the enrollment and payment process look like?
- Is there a waitlist, and how far in advance should we enroll?
That last question is especially important during peak enrollment seasons, like the lead-up to fall, when spots tend to fill quickly.
What to Observe With Your Own Eyes
- Beyond the questions you ask, pay attention to what you notice during the visit itself.
- Do the children seem engaged, calm, and comfortable?
- How do teachers interact with kids? Warmly? Patiently?
- Is the space clean, organized, and age-appropriate?
- Does your own child seem curious or hesitant in the space?
Your gut reaction during the tour is valuable information. A center can check every box on paper and still not feel like the right fit, and that instinct is worth trusting.
Ready to See It for Yourself?
The best way to answer most of these questions is in person.
Right now, we’re enrolling infants, toddlers, and preschoolers for the fall. Families who enroll by September 1st can reserve a guaranteed spot and receive one week of free daycare after their first 30 days of enrollment.
It’s a great time to come see our classrooms, meet our teachers, and get a feel for whether we’re the right fit for your family.
Schedule your tour today, and we’ll be glad to answer every question on your list, and probably a few you haven’t thought of yet.
